WAC snubbed by North Texas... again

How bad/sad is the current state of the WAC?

They have been rejected by the University of North Freaking Texas (sorry, Ben) for at least the third time in just over a decade. Yes, things are that bad for the conference and commissioner Karl Benson.

Following up on Monday night reports that had the Mean Green once again considering an offer from the league, the Denton Chronicle reports that UNFT has once again decided against making the jump from the Sun Belt. Benson had phoned the school earlier in the day to gauge their level of interest in the conference.

As it turns out, that level rhymes with the word “schmero”.

“I told [Benson] that while we appreciate the interest, the University of North Texas is going to be a member of the Sun Belt Conference and will work to continue building the league,” athletic director Rick Villarreal said. “We appreciate the opportunity and wish them luck as they move forward.”

UNFT becomes the second known school to turn down an offer from th WAC; earlier this month, Montana decided to remain at the Div. 1-AA level for the time being. The conference did add Texas State and the University of Texas at San Antonio, so they have that going for them. Which is good.
