Mack Brown blames coaches, not talent, for UT’s woes

In perhaps a fitting end to the worst season of the Mack Brown era at Texas, the Longhorns coughed the ball up four times in losing to in-state rival Texas A&M 24-17 Thursday night.

It was the school’s first losing season since 1997, and will almost certainly snap UT’s streak of 12 straight bowl games as they now stand at 5-7 -- including a staggering 3-6 record at home.

Suffice to say, based on the way the bottom unexpectedly dropped out of this year, there’s change blowing in the wind. Following the loss to the Aggies, Brown tossed the blame for a woeful season squarely on the shoulders of his coaching staff.

“I think just disappointing,” Brown said. “You can say a lot of words. It’s not our standard at all. It was obvious tonight that our players are as good as theirs. I think it goes back on coaches. It’s not talent. We had our chances to win the game. People have said it’s talent, it’s not.”

Perhaps no assistant on Brown’s staff has been a bigger target of UT Nation’s wrath than offensive coordinator Greg Davis. Brown was asked if he there would be changes made to his staff this offseason.

“What I will do is take my time and evaluate the coaches and the staff and each player and everything that we’re doing,” Brown said. “At that time, I’ll be able to make the conscious decision on what’s best for the program.”
