Report: WVU’s Stewart to retire

In the last five weeks, there have been seven Div. 1-A head coaches who have either fired themselves or been canned by their respective employers, including one from each category on Saturday alone.

Based on one report, that grouping is about to become an octet.

According to a pay website that you can’t access unless you fork over some cash, West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart is either retiring or considering retiring following the conclusion of the Mountaineers’ season. Stewart is in his third full season as WVU’s coach after replacing Rich Rodriguez, who left following the 2007 regular season for the Michigan job and could -- should? -- find himself on the coaching unemployment line in the not-too-distant future.

Emails sent and voice messages left for WVU officials by CFT in an attempt to confirm the reports have gone unanswered.

With one game left in the 2010 season, the Mountaineers still have an outside shot at a Big East title and the conference’s BcS berth that comes along with it. A loss by UConn against South Florida this coming weekend combined with a WVU win against Rutgers would send the Mountaineers to, probably, the Fiesta Bowl.

Whether Stewart will be there for whatever postseason game WVU heads to, however, remains to be seen. Well, based on one report buried behind a pay wall it does.
