Reports say McCarney accepts UNT job; Meyer ‘not made aware of that’

The Denton Record-Chronicle reported Saturday that Florida assistant Dan McCarney had been offered the vacant coaching position at North Texas late last week, but was still mulling the offer over.

Saturday night, ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad reported that the former Iowa State head coach had accepted the offer. The Palm Beach Post is reporting this morning that McCarney to the Mean Green is a “done deal”. CFT has been told separately that McCarney “will likely” accept the offer.

Following the Gators’ loss to Florida State yesterday, head coach Urban Meyer played Sgt. Schultz on the reports.

“Not that I know of,” Meyer said. “I have not been made aware of that.”

Barring an unexpected turn of events, though, it appears very likely Meyer will lose one of his most experienced assistants, with an official announcement coming as early as Monday.

One final note on the UNT coaching search: according to Schad, former Tulsa/Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe and former Alabama/TCU/Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione were also finalists for the vacancy created by the firing of Todd Dodge last month.
