TCU standing on firm ground as next-to-last BCS standings revealed

Week after week, the debate raged endlessly: does Boise State, provided they finish undefeated, deserve a shot at the national title? It was a topic that, besides CamGate 2010, had to be the biggest of the season.

Then Reno 911 happened.

Friday night, Boise State went on the road to No. 19 Nevada in what many considered to be the Broncos’ biggest hurdle in months. Four hours, one successful Hail Mary and two missed field goals later, Boise State had sunk to the bottom of BCS relevancy Titanic style.

And depending on who you ask, it was either as painful, or as funny, as the propeller guy, too.

Now that Boise is out of the BCS picture altogether, naturally the focus turns to the other Non-AQ brethren, TCU, who finished their regular season with a win over 1-11 New Mexico.

The latest BCS standings reveal that TCU, whether E. Gordon Gee likes it or not, is solidly in third place behind Auburn, the nation’s new No. 1 team, and Oregon, who fell to No. 2. Not that it really matters who the top 2 teams are, anyway.

Even better for the Horned Frogs is the fact that Stanford and Wisconsin, who come in at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively in the latest poll, have concluded their regular seasons as well, meaning there would be no reason -- other than a BCS inside dealing SNAFU -- for TCU to lose any ground. The BCS’ lone remaining Non-AQ has done everything they can to state their case for a chance at a national title and, based on the latest standings, have done so successfully. Now, all they can do is hope for an upset next week.

Speaking of the Badgers, it was nice to see Bucky come in ahead of Ohio State in this week’s poll as well. As you may have read earlier, one BCS “guru” (if there is such a thing), predicted that somehow, someway, Ohio State might jump Wisconsin in the latest BCS installment, completely negating the Badgers’ Oct. 16th win over the Buckeyes in Madison. The ending result of which would have Ohio State in the Rose Bowl representin’ as Big Ten champions. Such a travesty would only further prove the ineptitude of the flawed system in which we play college football, but this time, at least, the BCS didn’t completely crap its own bed.

Not that we’re okay with it or anything.

Also, as a reminder, the good folks at NBC Sports would like us to remind you that you can find all the top-25 polls here.
