The first of what will be a multitude of All-American teams was announced Wednesday morning, and it also happens to be among the most prestigious.
According to a release appearing on their official website, the 2010 American Football Coaches Association All-America Team was announced Monday morning by the AFCA. Given annually since 1945, it’s the only team chosen exclusively by coaches.
This year’s team is made up of 25 players from eight different conferences, and the only player from the 2009 team to make the cut this year is Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones.
The Big Ten led all conferences with six selections, followed by the ACC, Big 12 and SEC with four; the Pac-10 with three the Mountain West with two; and the Big East and Conference USA with one each.
There were four sophomores, six juniors and 15 seniors on the ’10 team. Oregon and Auburn, on a collision course for the national title game, had one player apiece on the squad -- Ducks running back LaMichael James and Tigers quarterback Cam Newton.
(Writer’s note: as pointed out both in the comments and via a few emails, Auburn actually had two players on the team, the second one being offensive lineman Lee Ziemba. My apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused or for any angst brought to Ziemba and/or his family.)
