Starting Hokies LB officially ruled out of bowl game

Any confusion regarding the status of Lyndell Gibson for Virginia Tech’s bowl game was cleared up Wednesday morning, and not in a good way for the Hokies defense.

A CT scan revealed the linebacker suffered a left scapular fracture and he’s officially been ruled out of the Hokies’ Orange Bowl game against Stanford Jan. 3. Gibson suffered the injury in Tech’s ACC title game win over Florida State this past weekend.

The redshirt sophomore will undergo surgery next week to repair the damage.

Not only will Gibson miss the postseason, it appears very likely he will be sidelined for spring practice as well; the initial prognosis is that it will take 6-8 months for a full return.

Gibson had started all 13 games in 2010, and is currently fourth on the team in tackles.
