DUI arrest will leave ‘Huskers minus a defensive starter

It’s fair to say that more than a few members of the Nebraska football program would prefer not to play in a bowl game against a team they already waxed by five touchdowns earlier this season.

One Cornhusker will indeed get to miss the rematch with Washington, although it’s safe to assume he would’ve much preferred a different reason for his absence.

According to the Omaha World-Herald, starting defensive tackle Baker Steinkuhler was cited early Tuesday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence. The paper reports that the sophomore was pulled over by university police after he was spotted driving without his headlights off -- at 1:45 a.m. local time -- and making a turn without signalling.

Steinkuhler was taken to a detox center after being pulled over, and blew a robust .115 according to police.

“He is a tremendous young man who made a mistake in judgment,” head coach Bo Pelini said it a statement.

Pelini has suspended Steinkuhler for one game, meaning he’ll miss the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl matchup with the Huskies.

Steinkuhler has started all thirteen games at defensive tackle for the Cornhuskers this season.
