Randy Shannon: From The U to The Horns?

Rumored to be a candidate for the head coaching openings at both Minnesota and Vanderbilt, Randy Shannon has nonetheless flown under the radar, pretty much, since his dismissal as Miami’s head coach.

There were also rumors that had Shannon being a candidate for the defensive coordinator position at Kentucky. That speculation, however, fell by the wayside.

A new round of speculation, though, has Shannon front and center for one of the most prestigious coordinator positions in the country.

According to the Dallas Morning News, reports are surfacing that Shannon is the favorite candidate to replace Will Muschamp as Texas’ defensive coordinator.

Dating back to the beginning of Shannon’s coaching career in 1991, he’s never coached outside of the general vicinity of the city of Miami, let alone the state of Florida. However, the Morning News writes that Shannon was reportedly high on Mack Brown‘s list of defensive coordinator candidates in 2007 before he took the job at Miami.

Mack Brown hiring Shannon to replace the new head coach at Florida would certainly be going outside the box, but it might be a box that Brown needs to explore.

Or a desperation move. One of the two.
