UCLA cans defensive coordinator, another assistant

There was a report that came out just short time ago from ESPNLosAngeles.com which, citing multiple sources familiar with the program, stated that UCLA’s assistant coaches are frustrated with head coach Rick Neuheisel‘s delay in making a decision about their futures.

The school has just issued a press release addressing the status of a couple of those frustrated assistants, although it’s doubtful they will be any less frustrated with how their job situation was addressed.

According to the release, defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough and wide receivers coach Reggie Moore have been “relieved of their duties”, effective immediately. Both coaches were informed in individual meetings with head coach Rick Neuheisel earlier today.

Bullough, 42, has been a member of the staff for five seasons, the past two as defensive coordinator. Moore, 42, just completed his third year as the wide receivers coach.

“The decisions to let Chuck and Reggie go were extremely difficult for me,” said Neuheisel in a statement. “They are both good coaches who have worked extremely hard for our program and they are both great people. When you make decisions like these, it not only affects the coaches, but their families as well.

“However, at the end of the day, I felt that making these moves was in the best interest of the future of our program. I certainly want to thank both of them for their contributions and wish them good luck with their future opportunities.

“I will begin the search for a new defensive coordinator immediately. At the same time, I am continuing to evaluate the entire staff as we move forward.”

One evaluation that will be of particular interest is that of offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Chow’s future at the school is very much up in the air despite a recent contract extension, and he’s been rumored to be of interest to the Texas Longhorns as they search for a new coordinator.
