Ball State dips into Div. 1-AA for new coach

Yep, it’s officially a slow news day in the world of college football.

According to reports, and apparently confirming rumors that have been “swirling” for the past few days, Ball State has hired Pete Lembo as their new head coach. Lembo has spent the past five seasons at Div. 1-AA Elon in North Carolina.

Lembo, who would replace the dismissed Stan Parrish, went 35-22 during his time with the Phoenix, including a berth in that level’s playoffs. For those uncertain of this “playoff” thing, and in order to avoid confusion and/or consternation, a “playoff” is something that occurs at the end of every season of almost every sport and is widely hailed as the proper way to determine a champion.

With Lembo’s hiring -- which should be official early this week -- there would be three Div. 1-AA vacancies, and all three would be in the MAC: Kent State, Temple and Miami of Ohio.

Until Maryland and Michigan come open, of course.
