Chizik on Malzahn/Maryland rumors: ‘there are possibilities of contact’

With speculation surfacing Monday that his offensive coordinator was connected to yet another head-coaching vacancy, Gene Chizik has refused to confirm Gus Malzahn is a candidate for the Maryland job. Then again, he didn’t even remotely deny it either.

Malzahn, along with SMU coach June Jones and ex-Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, were named by a Comcast-affiliated website as coaches who have interviewed for the job with the Terrapins.

Tuesday night, Chizik did his best to tap dance around the issue.

“To the best of my knowledge, there are possibilities of contact,” Chizik said. “I have not talked to anybody personally, but there are possibilities of contact in there. I can’t give any details because I don’t have any.”

Bruce Feldman of ESPN the Magazine can and does, though. According to Feldman, Malzahn interviewed with Maryland officials last Wednesday. Feldman intimates that something could happen on the Terrapins front in the 48 hours after their Dec. 29 bowl game.

CFT can also confirm Leach met with folks from Maryland “in the past few days.” Jones, through his agent, withdrew his name from consideration shortly after the reports connecting his name to the opening first surfaced.

UConn head coach Randy Edsall has also been mentioned as a possible replacement for Ralph Friedgen.
