Cal’s leading rusher headed to the NFL

With over 2,000 yards and more than two dozen touchdowns the past two seasons, Shane Vereen has been one of the more underappreciated talents in the country.

Next season, those talents will be on display in the NFL.

Vereen told the Santa Clarita Valley Signal that he has decided to give up the remainder of his collegiate eligibility and will make himself available for the April NFL draft. The fact that he already has his college diploma was a significant factor in his decision.

“I think the big part of my decision is I graduated early. I graduated in 3 1/2 years,” said Vereen. “The fact that I was done with school, had a decent season and was healthy put myself in a position to play in the NFL.”

Vereen said he informed head coach Jeff Tedford last Sunday, and said “it was very difficult.”

The junior led the Bears with 1,167 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns. He was third on the team in receptions (22) and receiving touchdowns (3), and was fourth in receiving yards (209).
