One-time starting QB at Penn State to transfer

For the first six games of the 2010 season, Robert “Rob " Bolden was the starting quarterback at Penn State.

Bolden eventually lost his starting job to former walk-on Matt McGloin, who promptly tossed five interceptions in the Nittany Lions’ bowl loss New Year’s Day.

Now, apparently, Bolden and his family have decided that Happy Valley is no longer... ummm... happy. Despite the fact that McGloin threw five interceptions in a disastrous bowl performance New Year’s Day, Bolden did not see the field in the loss to Florida.

That appears to have been the final straw for Bolden. And his father.

“I felt McGloin did a good job under the circumstances of him being a third-string guy,” said Mr. Bolden. “I felt as though he did very well. I felt he caught some bad breaks -- the same principle that got him in the game to begin with and the same principle that Rob was dealing with.

“But Rob ended up staying out for some struggles he had. It wasn’t a two-way street, I guess. We’re not happy about that.

“Rob had his ups and downs just the same as anybody would have had. But he was never allowed to rebound from that. He was never, in my eyes, coached through that. He didn’t learn a whole lot just sitting on the sideline the rest of the season.”

Seeing as Bolden is a true freshman and showed flashes of brilliance on the field, it doesn’t appear that he will have a hard time finding a home.

Bolden has yet to speak to Joe Paterno regarding his decision, but is expected to do so at some point this week as he asks for a release from his scholarship.
