‘Horns might be circling back to Boise’s Harsin to fill OC hole

By all accounts, there was/is an offer on the table for Paul Chryst to move from Wisconsin to Texas and become the Longhorns’ offensive coordinator.

It appears, though, that something is going down with Chryst, but it may not involve the Texas job.

According to OrangeBloods.com, a private plane is scheduled to fly out of Boise and is expected to land in Austin at 2:15 local time.  The assumption is that one of the passengers on that plane is Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin.

Harsin was rumored to be a candidate over a month ago for the Longhorns opening, shortly after Greg Davis resigned his coordinator post.  Since then, however, his name has flown under — if not completely off — the rumor mill radar.

And whither Chryst?  We have caught wind of chatter that he’s in line — if not the front-runner — to become Pitt’s next head coach.  Given the abruptness of what’s apparently renewed interest in Harsin on the part of Texas, that speculation may indeed have some legs.

We were pursuing Chryst because we have this obsession with establishing a rush-heavy offense, but I’m not sure that’s necessarily the answer. That’s not Big 12-style football. Or state of Texas (the quarterback state) football. I know we have been abysmal at it, but I’m afraid we’ll go too far in the other direction. TCU beat Wisconsin effectively because they threw the ball more and better. I think the Boise State offense is pretty much perfect.

The Horns better be able to run the ball a bit. Gilbert Grape isn’t gonna cut the mustard in an offense that is throw first. The Boise offense has been so effective because they have had EXCELLENT QB play. Sadly, (if you’re a Tex fan) that is in very short supply in Austin at the moment.

What was so impressive about Wisconsin’s offense in the Rose Bowl?

    I was thoroughly unimpressed.

cometkazie–I estimate that in the eight seasons that Chryst has coached as an offensive coordinator, his teams have played in almost exactly 100 games. The Rose Bowl was one of them.

The playcalling wasn’t nearly as bad as people are saying, but even if it hadn’t been very good, he’s had a great run as OC over the past eight seasons. Go for a larger sample size, and you’ll see why he’s impressed.
