QB Tom Savage abruptly transfers from Rutgers

Tom Savage entered the 2010 season coming off a freshman year that had written “star” all over the Rutgers quarterback. Five months later, Savage ended the season on the bench, supplanted by another freshman phenom.

Now, the QB finds himself -- of his own volition -- on the outside of the football program looking in.

According to a press release issued by the school, Savage, along with freshman running back Casey Turner, has informed head coach Greg Schiano their intent to transfer and has been granted conditional releases. What those conditions are weren’t made available.

“We wish Tom and Casey the best in their future endeavors,” said Schiano. And, if you were wondering, yes, that was the entire statement from Schiano.

Savage was a Freshman All-American in 2009 and started the first four games of the 2010 season. He lost his starting job to freshman Chas Dodd due in part to injuries and in part because off utter ineffectiveness -- he wasn’t even ranked among the top 100 quarterbacks in the country in pass efficiency when Dodd passed him on the depth chart.

It’s unclear where the Pennsylvania native will land, but he had scholarship offers from, among others, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida State before signing with the Scarlet Knights.

Turner has already decided to transfer to Florida A&M.
