Two things,

One, Boise State is lucky they didn't lose their head coach.

Two, After Luck graduates, Stanford will return to a 500 ball club. Because at Stanford, they actually put student before athlete and this is why Stanford has a hard time competing at a high level year in and year out in football and basketball.

burntorangehorn, I meant that he needs to make a push to keep him NOT because he has other ideas but because there was a very good chance that he was going to want to go to the NFL with Harbaugh.

Looks like Roman and Fangio are gone so it's time for him to get some coordinators in place, quickly.

Now, whether it's Harbaugh or Shaw at the helm, 2011 is likely an 8-4 or 9-3 regular season because of the 3 offensive linemen that have to be replaced, along with Luck's leading receiver, his second leading receiver and TE. With all those new starters, Stanford must get them up to speed quickly because they only get two OOC games before they start in conference play when they start with San Jose State and a road trip to Duke and then start conference play at ASU, an open date, home dates with UCLA and Colorado. at Wazzu and at home against the Huskies before they get to the meat of their schedule with a road game against the Trojans. I can see them start out 7-0 but then it gets really tough. The running game is going to be even more important than it was in the past and it might hurt Luck's chances for the Heisman, if he has to defer to the running game, especially in the red zone unless he can find adequate replacements for the passing game.

edgy--I think Shaw would be crazy not to try to retain Fangio, if of course Fangio doesn't head to the NFL with Harbaugh.

cornbread--yes, keeping Luck and most of the other starters should make the transition pretty smooth. Things may fade a little at Stanford over time, as it really was an incredible ascent to a height that's hard to sustain, but there's no reason this team shouldn't compete for the conference championship again next season.

It's a good hire; however, I think that they need to make a big push for their old DC or elevate someone from his staff because that defense was one of the real keys to the season.

I agree, burntorangehorn. They won't have to do any major overhauls similar to situations in the past with Nebraska (Callahan) and Michigan (Rodriguez). They can stay the pace, and should be able to continue in the upward direction they are going, especially given one more year with Luck behind center.

They can stay relevant without Harbaugh...it'll be interesting to see how it works out.

Great choice. He's been a good coordinator, and has a lot of admiration from his players as a leader. That's a pretty good combination. It doesn't always work, but the odds of continuity are much better with Shaw than they would've been with an outsider.
