Michigan may pilfer NFL’s Ravens for defensive coordinator

After 31 years at the collegiate level, Greg Mattison headed for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens in 2008, first as a linebackers coach and then, following the departure of Rex Ryan, as defensive coordinator.

Now, it appears the coach may have an interest in dropping back down to his long-time football level.

Both the Baltimore Sun and National Football Post are reporting that Mattison is currently engaged in talks with new Michigan head coach Brady Hoke bout becoming the Wolverines’ coordinator. Mattison and Hoke have a fairly extensive history together, serving together on staffs at Western Michigan and Michigan in the mid-eighties on through the mid-nineties. Hoke was the defensive ends coach when Mattison was U-M’s defensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996.

There’s no word on when a decision will be made, or which direction Hoke will turn if Mattison eschews the opportunity.

The 61-year-old coach has also served as coordinator or co-coordinator at Florida and Notre Dame in the last decade and a half.
