Tom Savage’s dad decries Rutgers ‘dictator’, will appeal decision to limit transfer options

Over the weekend, former Rutgers quarterback Tom Savage told the Newark Star-Ledger that he would likely hold off on making a decision on where he will transfer to until the spring.

Today, we may have learned at least a portion of the reason for the delay.

Savage’s father told the Miami Herald that his son will not be permitted to speak to several schools per stipulations laid out by Rutgers.  Specifically, Savage has been barred from discussing a transfer with Miami, Florida, Florida State and Michigan.  None of those schools are in Rutgers’ conference, so it’s unclear exactly why he’s not permitted to move on to any of those institutions, and RU did not give the player a reason.

As a result of that head-scratching decision, Savage has filed an appeal to have the stipulations lifted.  The appeal must be heard within 10 days, and the panel that will hear Savage’s case consists of three university professors.

Needless to say, Tom Savage Sr. is not happy with head coach Greg Schiano‘s decision to limit his son’s options.

“I don’t understand how one person can be dictator over your son’s future,” Savage Sr. said of Schiano. “I know they recruit Florida, but the ones that want to go to Rutgers are going to go to Rutgers. … It’s just wrong. I will talk to a lawyer.”

Savage Sr. indicated that the Hurricanes will be very much in play for his son’s services if/when he’s given permission to speak to the school.

“Miami called his high school coach and said they really like Tom and he would fit well in their offense and they are really interested,” the father said. “Tom is interested. He has always loved Miami.”

Due to their unending benevolence, Savage has been given permission by his former school to speak to Marshall, Western Michigan, North Illinois and Arizona.  So he’s got that going for him, which is nice.

This makes Rutgers and Schiano look petty and malevolent. They are not playing these teams, let the kid go. Pretend that you are in the big leagues Greg and that Rutgers is a destination school, not a fallback option.

wtf??? who cares where he goes as long as he is not going to a rival school or in conference? I understand michigan as they didnt offer him a job, same as miami, but hell maybe all four teams for that matter.. I did like schiano and thought he could wind up at a biig school, but now i really question if he will ever get the phone call…tough dic(K)tators usually dont win!!!

Schiano is looking pretty petty. None of these schools are on his schedule any time soon so what’s his problem? Is he trying to work out something with one of them for 2012 or 2013? I don’t think it’ll help the school schedule a game, if they deny them a chance at a player that they want.

From what I have heard Schiano and Golden do not get along, at all. I think this and the recruiting angle have everything to do with this. He’s sticking it to Golden. Sticking it!!!

Schiano is pissed he did not take the UM job when it was offered to him before Shannon. Fool!

its really dumb to try to restrict where someone wants to go especially if you don’t play that team at all

I think Greg Schiano’s star is slowly fading. He was the hot commodity a couple of years ago. The U, Notre Dame, etc. Now no schools are knocking on his door.

    snccoach,

    Welcome to college football.

Coaches come and go with their teams’ record.

Yet another example of why it makes no sense for elite recruits to sign a letter of intent.
