Urban development: Meyer hired by ESPN as analyst

In the wake of Urban Meyer‘s (surprisingly good) on-air auditions, it was a widely-held thought that it was a matter of when not if the ex-Florida head coach was hired by ESPN.

Monday, the “when” officially came to fruition.

Citing a source, Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post is reporting that Meyer has been offered and accepted an analyst position with the network. It’s unclear precisely what Meyer’s role will entail, although we are privately holding out hope that the hiring will mean less airtime for Dr. Lou and his insufferable sidekick Mark May.

ESPN is scheduled to hold a conference call at 3:30 ET that will include Meyer, so the coach’s specific duties could become clearer later this afternoon.

Meyer stunned the college football world -- again -- in December by announcing he was stepping down as the Gators’ coach in order to spend more time with his family -- and due to health concerns if some reports are to be taken at face value. Per Lieser, Meyer may continue to live in Gainesville and commute to Bristol, Conn., a couple/few days a week.

He’s also expected to maintain a still-unspecified position within UF’s athletic department.
