Kansas WR busted on drunk-driving charge

Drinking & Driving

After a brief four-day respite, a college football player has once again found himself making news for all of the wrong reasons.

According to the Lawrence Journal-World, Kansas wide receiver Chris Omigie was arrested very early Saturday morning on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.  Other than the arrest occurred after a traffic stop, no further details were available.

“He is still a member of our team. Coach (Turner) Gill will handle the discipline internally,” Jim Marchiony, a KU associate athletics director, told the paper.

The redshirt freshman played in 10 games last season and had seven receptions for 73 yards.

If we did not have much experience with the horror of drunk driving accidents, even within our family, this parade of arrests of various college football players during the lull in football news would be funny. But is not funny, and far from it. Precious people are injured for life or lose their lives every day due to DUIs, which often, though not always included alcohol. Many years ago, while students at LSU, we lost a dear friend and a pre-med student who was on his way to becoming a great doctor and his sister who was a young mother, great wife, and a social worker helping those who needed help to a drunk driving accident. Her young daughter was also killed in the accident. The person under the influence in the other car also died. This is preventable. Better education, better friends, night club and bar active participation, alert bar tenders and waitresses, are all needed. We are sure that SADD and MADD have chapters in every college town and around them. If anyone needs any information to help a young man or woman, please communicate with those organizations.
