Mich. St. officially finishes replacing Don Treadwell

A week after word first surfaced that Michigan State had filled the lone vacancy on Mark Dantonio‘s coaching staff, the school officially confirmed as much late Friday morning.

In a press release, Dantonio announced he has hired Terrence Samuel as wide receivers coach. Samuel will replace Don Treadwell, who left to become the head coach at Miami of Ohio.

“We had a number of outstanding candidates apply for the position, but Terrence Samuel really emerged as the top candidate during the interview process,” Dantonio said in a statement. “Terrence did a great job during a chalkboard session with the offensive staff, and he did equally well in a teaching session with some of our current players. I had the opportunity to first talk with Terrence at the American Football Coaches Association Convention [in mid-January] and then again here on campus, so he went through an extensive interview process.”

Samuel spent last season at Central Michigan, where he coached receivers as well.

“To have the opportunity to work with Coach Dantonio is the primary reason that I accepted this position,” Samuel said. “Coach Enos had nothing but positive things to say about Coach Dantonio and Michigan State. He told me that Coach Dantonio creates a remarkable working and teaching environment. Obviously, I’m also excited to be back in the Big Ten. It truly feels like I’m back home.”

Prior to his one year at CMU, Samuel had spent the majority of his coaching career below the Div. 1-A level, with the exception of a stint as a grad assistant at Arizona in the late nineties.
