Akina leaves Arizona, heading back to ‘Horns

A month after leaving Texas for Arizona in a lateral move -- and two days after his replacement left for an NFL coordinator job -- Duane Akina is returning to Austin.

According to a tweet from Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne, “Akina alerted Coach Stoops and myself this morning that he would be returning to Texas due to family considerations.” Interestingly, “family considerations” were one of the reasons cited in the initial move.

“Although disappointed because of the commitment we had made we respect Coach Akina’s decision based on family,” Byrne said in another tweet.

Regardless, Akina is now apparently headed back to Texas and will replace Jerry Gray as defensive backs coach; Gray left over the weekend for the Tennessee Titans’ coordinator job.

An official announcement from one or both of the school is expected at some point today.
