Latest news is that as of this moment there have been over $35,000 raised by the students, fans, supporters and alums of Alabama and additional monies raised in town and via several other collection points. We have joined in solidarity with our Auburn friends have contributed with the Alabama students, etc. via Facebook. Any of you who would wish to contribute can do so via Facebook. We offer this great poem from a beloved American poet who gave his life young as a soldier for this country:

Joyce Kilmer. 1886–1918

              Trees

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Though Alabama fans did not do this extreme act of vandalism, as we suggested on the very first day, it would be a magnanimous act of kindness and healing for Alabama alums and fans to offer to help try to save the remaining trees, replace what may be needed (soil, God forbid, but even the two massive and beautiful Southern live oaks, etc.). Latest news is that Alabama student(s?) have started a fund and are collecting money for this effort, raising almost $6000 in 24 hours. Some of the wealthiest folks such as Coach Saban could contribute as well as others. This is happening now to the great commendation of Bama faithful. The actions of one nutcase are not representative of the many good fans of Alabama. Keep up the good work Bama! The news media is following this story throughout the U.S. and around the world. Maybe somehow great good can come from this great destructive act of vandalism! Let it be Lord!

Hello dawgfan63,
I just read your comment.
As a dog lover, I believe there is no such thing as "just a dog."
Of all the college mascots, none have been more dear than the Ugas! Charming and loyal and totally endearing. I am truly sorry that yet another has passed on to a heavenly field and heavenly hedges. I have lived in Auburn, AL all of my adult life. I earned my BS and Masters at the university here. My husband and I raised our sons here. My home is less than four blocks from Toomer's Corner. Georgia fans park on my street, and I happily direct them to parking on private property at no cost. While I do not attend games, I certainly follow them on TV and radio preferring to be at home. I have always had great respect for all the schools in the SEC. My father attended U of A.
As sad as losing the trees will be, along with other living things in Samford Park, the saddest aspect of all regarding this event --to me-- is the wound inflicted on the name of the University of Alabama by a single individual. Every person trying to make sense of what happened should keep this singular fact in mind:
one person did this.
To all others posting here:
On another point, to the best of my knowledge, the day Paul "Bear" Bryant died, was as somber and sad a day in Auburn, as it was everywhere in the state. I have no recollection of any celebrations in Auburn, not even at Toomer's Corner. I spent that evening talking on the phone with my sister who was a great Bama fan. Naturally, she was heartbroken. She passed away ten years ago. I miss the Bear, and I miss my sister. Unless there is some miracle at Toomer's Corner, I will miss my trees.

rolltide510 says:
This was a classless move and I wish it hadn’t happened, but then I start thinking about how Auburn fans celebrated by rolling Toomer’s corner to celebrate Bear Bryant’s death, and I realize there’s bigger problems in life for me to worry about. I figure this just gives Auburn room to build a 50 foot bronze statue of Cam; win-win right?

Don't be such a douche. Despite what you and Deb might want to believe, the trees at Toomer's Corner were never rolled when Bryant died. That lie has been told so many times people believe it to be true.

listen to this.......... This will be over in a few short weeks, but let that had been Michael Vick killing or even cutting down trees in the wrong spot. He would be in jail serving a 3 year sentence. I would laugh but it's not funny. I can't wait to see what they do to him. Granted it's not a dog, but it is a living thing. LoL. Where are all the people that protects the trees?

Sherman should have started his march in Alabama. What a bunch of idiot rednecks. As a Browns and Buckeyes fan, I've witnessed epic feats of moronic fanaticism. But, I can always count on some Bama bumpkin to top any act of stupidity that my fellow Browns & Buckeyes fans conjure up.
The guy who poisoned the trees probably kisses his sister and is still fighting the war of northern aggression.
The State of Alabama now holds the record for the longest BCS title buying streak at 2 in a row!

I don't usually post on anything related to football, but it really is a shame that someone thought that poisoning the Toomer's corner trees was a good idea. I was there this year when Auburn won the Iron Bowl, it's gorgeous there and the tradition that this guy destroyed is harmless fun.

I have never in all of my 60 years responded to a blog post. But I couldn't let the comment from Rolltide510 pass by. I was at Auburn when the great Bear Bryant died. Roll Toomer's Corner? Where did you get THAT? I remember black ribbons and wreaths everywhere and there was a caravan of Auburnites who attended the memorial service for this wonderful coach. He was an institution and we were all saddened by his passing.

Destroying the oaks at Toomer's Corner was petty and perverse. It's shameful, no matter who did this. But please get your facts straight before you accuse Auburn of celebrating the Bear's death! I don't think I ever remember a sadder day while I was a student at Auburn.

I agree. I have a BA and MA from Alabama, and I have been a huge Tide fan all my life, but even my passion pales in comparison to some of those who are fans of 'Bama or Auburn but have never darkened the door of a classroom at either place. They seem to think that they're NFL-esque programs that just happen to have a university attached for some odd reason, as opposed to institutions of higher learning that have football programs as part of their extracurricular activites. Such folks need to get a grip, get a life, or get lost.

frug: We forgot about the livestream of the corner, but your concern we think is correct. We telephoned our relatives and friends there in Auburn and they did not think there was recordings that were saved. As of a couple of years ago there were not recordings at all but if there are any they are probably the loop kind that re-records over the tape after 24 or 48 hours.

dcroz: some great points, hopefully as you have toned in your posting, some sound heads will prevail and those who know the moron who did this will turn him in.

To good Alabama fans: Just a suggestion: a group of fair minded loyal Bama fans and/or alums could contact Auburn and offer to dig up the venerable trees and the dirt around them as far as is needed, replace the dirt and the trees with at least something akin, though not as large or venerable. Certainly, a magnanimous offer such as this would bring some healing and probably forestall the retaliation which likely is to come at some point in the future (as noaxetogrind) as posted. This is a sad episode and needs to be rectified some kind of way.

Auburn fans didn't roll Toomers the day that bear bryant died. the stories about someone planting 28-27 in the grass and putting an Auburn jersey on the statue are probably true, but Toomers corner didn't get rolled on the day that bear bryant passed away that was just this lunatic's(Al fram Dadeville) way of trying to rationalize his psychotic behavior.

some bama fans try to claim that it happened, but they also try to claim that they've won 13 NCs (they've won 8).

Many Bama fans commenting on how they don't agree with this act of vandalism, which any rational adult would concur with. I am sure there will be a tremendous opportunity for Bama fans to make it right. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to know that there is a group of Tide rollers out there who know who this classless and obviously not too bright guy is. Turn his ass in. This moron not only probably killed two legendary trees but has damaged the soil for the next "3 to 5 years" according to the experts quoted and the poison will also migrate to surrounding areas due to it's density. Unless this guy is outed, unfortunately I don't think it will be long until we see a payback of some type.
P.S.- A little bit of irony that Auburn had to send the soil samples to Mississippi State for analysis. Life in the SEC.

This guy is a total lunatic. He seemed to indicate that his motivation was that someone put a Cam Newton jersey on the statue of Bear Bryant at the Iron Bowl, and of course he brought up the rolling of Toomer's Corner when Bryant died. Two things:

1) You can easily cut a jersey off a statue; I don't think the permanent destruction of two massive trees can be considered a proportional response.

2) The celebration of Bear's passing was TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO, and it only proves that Auburn has its share of moronic fans, too, NOT that's it's OK to behave as badly (if not worse).

At a time when the State of Alabama should be celebrating the unprecedented (and extremely unlikely to ever be repeated) feat of having its two major schools win back-to-back BCS titles-- with back-to-back 14-0 seasons and back-to-back Heisman winners--it now has to face the embarassment of this idiot doing something so incredibly stupid and bringing up the "rubes and rednecks" slogan once again.

My first thought when I read this was, where can I get some of that Spike 80DF stuff. I have a neighbor that is just an outright A hole and he loves and worships his trees.

Then I realized that if I destroyed his F ing Magnolias I could end up in jail. So, as much as it is tempting, I decided that poisoning his trees would be really, really stupid.

Not only could I go to jail, but he would have to retaliate.

This could get messy.
