We need to forget this demented man now. He probably will plead guilty or "not guilty by reason of diminished capacity" with a trial which probably will not take place by this time next year. As with Auburn staff and experts, trying to save the trees, and if not, some replacement of those venerable iconic trees with the largest transplants possible (we would suggest), hopefully, a gift from an Alabama fan. The great Facebook fund raising to help with the expenses of this situation is ongoing. Collection points remain in Tuscaloosa and in Auburn, new ones being set up soon. We have given to the Facebook site and we will give again today, and hope to do so on a weekly basis. All you that wish to give you can go to Facebook and give through PayPal. We are in solidarity with the students, staff, fans, and boosters of the University of Alabama who are reaching out a helping hand to their across state rivals in Auburn. Thank you Bama! Great work!

We thought that we should post this great poem which reflects the sentiments of so many AU fans and alums and friends throughout the SEC, U.S. and world:

Joyce Kilmer. 1886–1918

         Trees

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Latest word we have heard (and we think this may be posted on CFT as well): the "alleged" deranged vandal was unable to afford an attorney so the court appointed one for him. This attorney has asked to recuse himself due to conflict of interest. The attorney represents Auburn University in various matters. So the bottom line is the defendant could not afford an attorney, but was able to post $50,000 bond to be released from jail. Hmmm! Could not afford an attorney, but could post $50,000 to get his behind out of jail?! Somehow, it seems doubtful that Auburn University will receive any restitution from this guy. Alabama is raising money for the effort to save or replace the venerable iconic 130 year old oak trees at Toomer's Corner. $6000 in 24 hours was raised. Great effort Bama! Keep up the good work, to help heal the actions of one crazed Bama fan, not all fans of Bama, please all keep this in mind, the actions of one crazed Bama fan.

This is a National Monument and should be treated as one legally. If it takes all Alum and current students to write to the judge for this case and plead that he get the FULL 10 YEARS.Lets see how he likes the law now!!

If they were "just trees" nothing would have happened to them. This person knew that they were part of an important part of the Auburn campus and tradition, and targeted them as such.

@masterofthegridiron

Apparently you never had the opportunity to attend a university and participate in college traditions. This would be like someone poisoning the cherry trees on the mall in DC. I'm sorry you don't understand that it's wrong to destroy someone else's property, much less a university landmark. :roll:

And it's also sad that you have no appreciation for nature. Live oaks can't simply be replanted. It takes decades for them to achieve maturity.

What's more, a 62-year-old man engaging in this type behavior clearly has some emotional/mental health issues.

So nothing about this is funny, and you embarrass yourself.

@southern - something like this just violates everything decent sane fans believe in and hold sacred. We trash talk and bash each other, sometimes the heat and intensity gets high, but we do it because we are passionate about our schools and it ends there. We spent great many days on campus absorbing the experience and traditions of those great universities. They are so entrenched in our communities and state that it captures even those that did not attend. That is amazingly powerful but unfortunately, some individuals with some defective wiring take it way too far. I was not aware of this tradition on this story broke but I most certainly understand the depth at which it impacts the Auburn Nation for traditions like these are present on every campus. I most certainly empathize with Auburn and the fans right now because it is just something that, until now, was just unthinkable and unimaginable.

dkhhuey: Thank you. We may have many disagreements about SEC-Ohio State competitions since we are LSU grads and devout Tigers fans and we have some of the same type of feelings (we think it is genetic...about Ole Miss) but we commend your posting for great thought and encouragement. It appears that some take college football rivalries past the norm and past what is acceptable. It looks like unless a miracle happens, the two iconic 130 year old venerable oak trees will die. The Auburn folks are trying to prevent the death of all the other tres (magnolias, live oaks, etc.) and all shrubs. Our family and friends have driven by and see so many people working, area cordoned off, tests being done, soil samples, excavations, ditch dug, etc. so they seem to be trying everything they know in consultation with the best experts in the country.

As an Ohio State grad and devout Buckeye man, I hate absolutely everything about the ugly helmet wearing wolverines - but at no time did I ever think of doing anything like this!

Passion is what makes college football what it is today but this type of behavior is just plain wrong on every single level! It is sad to see something that obviously touches so many individuals lives in a positive manner destroyed by the one disgusting person. I am sure that the University of Auburn and its fans will restore/replace the tree and continue on with the tradition but right now, this just plain sucks!

I was really jamming at work yesterday and then all of a sudden I saw this story break.

Not only is it horrible that one of the best traditions and rivalries in college football won't be defined by what's happened on the field but what one crazed, lunatic fan did in hatred of his rival.

This isn't to the level of some other things (shootings, stabbings, etc.) that have injured and even killed fellow fans after games. But what it will rob people of is future memories and this tradition that is Toomer's Corner.

All you can do is pray that God will not let this one man take away something that is so precious to tens of thousands of fans. Because there's plenty of times where people said it would be "miraculous" or "impossible" and yet...those miracles happened.

Deb: Thank you. When we met the previous 3 Ugas each time these beautiful English bulldogs were licking the outstretched hands of children with a big smile on his face. The children were giggling and laughing and he seemed to really enjoy this. Uga VI (1999-2008) reigned so long that I think it gave us fans an unrealistic expectation on the their length of life. The last two had short lifespans.

Talking about taking shots at the South or at Alabama (it seems it is pile on Alabama season?), read the last few postings. We used to have good hearted rivalries. Most of it involved toilet paper and kidnapping the others mascot or costume (from Tulane, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Arkansas, Rice, and I think one time FL) but I won't give any details to protect the guilty! Nothing was done that was permanent and we would get as much as we gave out. The fervor of "hatred" between fans now has gone too far. I hope, we all hope, that something will be done to help bring a healing, because what has been done by two universities in Alabama is most extraordinary over the past 2 years. Have a great evening. I am on my way to the hospital.

I THINK that I shall never see
A thing as dead as auburn's tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is stuffed
With toilet paper 3 ply, puffed;

A tree that prays they lose the game,
Or live with toilet paper shame;

A tree that may in Autumn wear
A nest of Charmin in her hair;

Upon whose bosom leaves are squashed;
By a redneck; pressure washed.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But someone else has killed that tree

So sorry to hear she is back in the hospital. Please give her my best.

I don't know why people love to take shots at the South or think that when one person does something crazy it's indicative of millions of people. And there's nothing wrong with hard work. My dad grew up picking cotton in the fields and had a red neck of his own, but his hard work put his children through college and his son through law school. My brother received a very prestigious honor today, so Daddy did well by us :)

Sorry to hear about the latest Uga. Have heard that bulldogs have shorter lifespans than other dog breeds. He may not be the fiercest mascot in the SEC, but he is the cutest.

We are SEC fans, especially LSU fans, but we have a very soft spot for Georgia. One of our family, our brother in law is a former player for the Dawgs and a good one at that (in the dinosaur age, like all of us! ) so we often pull for Georgia against any team in the SEC West (except LSU) and against ALL non-conference opponents.

UGA's precious charismatic mascot Uga VII died of a heart attack 11-19-09 (and reigned only about 2 years) and recently Uga VIII "Big Bad Bruce" born 9-12-09 and died this month on the 4th. The sad thing is that so many fans of the Big 10, Big 12, etc. posted ridicule and derisive comments about their deaths.

Deb: Amen! My wife in now back in the hospital but I have been helping and following the postings. What is wrong with some people? This situation is a shame! Two precious mascot bulldogs (Uga) dying at Georgia is a shame! Why do people have to make fun of it and then brand everyone a hillbilly, redneck, etc. I am full blooded Cajun but when I was working hard in the fields in South Louisiana when I was a boy and young man, I had a red neck, red face, red arms, etc. Thank you for straightening out some which appear to want to be up to no good.

As I've said, I have many friends who are Auburn grads. Those Auburn fans who've told us they or their friends/relatives were present for the rolling of Toomer's Corner when Bear died still insist they were there and that it did take place. So I'm not spreading a rumor started by Bama fans.

But that's not the issue. Like most Alabama families, mine also includes diehard Auburn fans that I love dearly. The point is that you don't tar an entire fanbase because of the actions of one person.

I'm not from Alabama either, but much of my family is and they are exceptional, hard-working people, many of whom have advanced degrees, and all of whom spend their free time working for the benefit of others. Their character is so far beyond yours, it's a shame to mention you in the same paragraph.

Alabama, like all states, is filled with saints and scholars and eccentrics and everyday people ... and unfortunately, a few lunatics like the one that committed this act of insanity. Someone who would damn an entire state for one person's behavior and use this opportunity to spew his bigotry is no better than that nut. Pity the poor state that has to claim you.

buckeyeboy: Auburn has a beautiful mascot, an American eagle. However, LSU has a Bengal tiger. Maybe LSU will be willing to do Auburn a favor and feed the tiger some idiot for lunch? Naw, we do not wish him harm, just force him to make complete restitution. However, we wonder how he will would make full restitution when he apparently needed a court appointed (free) lawyer?
