Hokies call an audible on play-caller

Last season, Virginia Tech set school records for points scored (474) and total offense (5,632).

So, naturally, the Hokies have made a change to who will direct the offensive traffic on game days.

During the course of an interview that appeared on his website, BeamerBall.com, head coach Frank Beamer revealed that offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring would no longer be his play-caller. Instead, that responsibility has been shifted to quarterbacks coach Mike O’Cain.

Beamer indicated that the fact that projected starter Logan Thomas has a close relationship with O’Cain was the impetus for the change, although Stinespring has been the subject of significant criticism over the past few years for his “vanilla” play-calling.

“We want to get that quarterback in a rhythm, get him in a groove and we think that as close as Mike is with Logan, it could be a smart move,” Beamer said. “Also, with the addition of more recruiting responsibilities for Coach Stinespring, with him out of pocket and on the road a little more, it’s just another reason why we think this is a smart move.”

The school confirmed in a press release Tuesday afternoon the shift in responsibilities, although the release did indicate Stinespring will retain his title as coordinator as well as take over as offensive tackles coach.
