The Charlotte 49ers football program, which won’t begin play in Div. 1-AA until the 2013 season, had been hoping to hire a head coach by April 1 of this year.
According to one report, they have done just that, and with a month to spare.
The Charlotte Observer, citing a university source, is reporting that Wake Forest defensive coordinator Brad Lambert has been hired as the 49ers’ first football coach. He’s expected to be introduced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Lambert, who is expected to make a $175,000 base salary his first year at the school, has been with the Demon Deacons since 2001. Prior to that, the 46-year-old had coached on staffs at Marshall and Oklahoma. He’s never been a head coach at any level prior to this job with the 49ers.
The Observer reports that Lambert will be permitted to begin recruiting immediately for a redshirt freshman class in 2012. He can also hire two assistants this year before completing the remainder of his staff next year.
