True frosh Jayhawk QB KO’d from spring by ‘personal circumstances’

In the hopes of getting a jumpstart on his collegiate and putting himself in the thick of the battle for the starting quarterback job, Brock Berglund enrolled early at Kansas with the intention of participating in spring practice beginning April 1.

At least for now, those plans have been derailed.

Head coach Turner Gill announced Wednesday that, due to what he described as “personal circumstances”, Berglund will not participate in spring practice. Instead, the early enrollee will join the rest of the Jayhawks’ 2011 recruiting class in the summer.

“Brock Berglund has decided to change to modified class scheduling this semester,” Gill said. “This change will allow him to still be eligible this fall. Due to personal circumstances, we have decided it is in his best interest to come in (during) the summer with the rest of the outstanding 2011 recruiting class. Brock is committed to being a student-athlete at the University of Kansas.”

The door for Berglund to participate in the spring sessions was left slightly ajar as a KU official told the Lawrence Journal-World that the freshman “would be eligible to join the team at any spring drills remaining should the personal matter be cleared up before the end of April.” Additionally, Berglund has arranged to take classes online while he’s away from the campus dealing with the unspecified personal situation.

Whatever the situation is that will prevent Berglund from commencing his quest to become a first-year starter, it apparently has nothing to do with him getting cold feet about his choice of schools.

“I am committed to being a part of the Kansas football program and am excited to join my teammates this summer,” the QB said in a statement.

Berglund, who hails from Highlands Ranch, Colo., was a three-star prospect according to Rivals.com and rated as the No. 15 dual-threat QB by the recruiting website. In addition to Kansas, Berglund had scholarship offers from, among others, Boise State, Colorado, Kansas State, UCLA and Utah.
