For all intents and purposes, the year 2010 was one big circus when it came to Seantrel Henderson -- particularly in the months leading up to his transfer to Miami. Apparently, based on one report, the show’s back in town.
By way of the Miami Herald, InsideTheU.com is reporting that the mammoth offensive tackle has been suspended for the Hurricanes’ season opener against Maryland. No reason for the suspension was given, although the Herald suggests the punishment may be related to academics.
The website is also reporting, citing multiple unnamed sources, that Henderson is unhappy with Al Golden‘s new coaching staff. Randy Shannon, fired by the school late last year, was reportedly one of the main reasons Henderson opted for the ‘Canes last summer.
Henderson, who started nine games as a true freshman last season, was listed No. 2 on Miami’s pre-spring depth chart.
Golden has subsequently denied the transfer rumors in a statement but, interestingly, did not comment on the suspension angle of the story.
“Seantrel has every intention of remaining with the University of Miami and our football program,” Golden said in the statement. “It is disappointing that individuals are taking the liberty to hypothesize on his future. He is coming off a strong finish to off-season workouts, rotated with the first team on Thursday and is well respected and liked by his teammates.
“Seantrel is growing into a leader, loves the game and cares deeply about being a part of the Miami Hurricane Family.”
Henderson, the top recruit in the nation last year according to Rivals.com, had committed to USC on national television on signing day last February, but did not immediately sign his Letter of Intent due to uncertainty over potential sanctions facing the Trojans football program. After signing his USC LOI in March -- after proclaiming he was “hundred thousand, trillion percent” a Trojan, -- rumors began to surface that the lineman was getting cold feet yet again.
USC ultimately released him from his scholarship in early July, and he transferred to Miami a week later.
UPDATED 7:39 p.m. ET: Henderson has released a statement denying that he’s considering a transfer.
“I am committed to my teammates, coaches and the championship goals we are chasing at the University of Miami. I have no desire to play anywhere but at the U.”
