I didn't overlook the academic status of Florida. There was no reason to specifically mention Florida since we were discussing an issue involving OSU and Alabama. Yes, the academic distance between the SEC and Big 10 is closing. That's why in my original comment to rjsjr I said:

Traditionally, the Big 10 has had higher academic standards than the SEC. But that’s been changing in recent years, with some SEC schools outperforming some Big 10 schools.

In fact, Florida outperforms Ohio State. But, again, that was not the topic of the discussion. As a whole, the Big 10's admission standards remain stricter than the SEC's. And if you'll check the current rankings, you'll find Vanderbilt still outranks all SEC schools and all Big 10 schools except Northwestern. However, Florida does top the remaining SEC schools.

So my post was accurate. I can't give a rundown on every SEC school in every post when it's not relevant to the conversation. Failing to mention Florida was not intended to be insulting.

@deb: why overlook the academic status of the University of Florida? They are in the top 15 of public universities in the country (U.S., not "countryside"). I'm playing semantics ;) Yes, I'm sure the Big 10's admission standards are stricter overall than the SEC's--although Vandy would be the exception. Vanderbilt's admission standards would be higher than any Big 10 school's except perhaps Northwestern's and Michigan's. Just meant that Bama's not purposely prioritizing football over academics and granting special concessions to Carter.

Did you go to Vandy for grad school? I went to Mizzou, then earned a scholarship to Vandy for grad school, but a cancer diagnosis blew up my plans. Had to turn down grad school to hang onto my health insurance and get treatment. After that, life just took a different route. The road not taken ...

Wouldn't that still indicate an academic discrepancy between the schools on the value of academics? Minor admission requirement differences for specific areas of study are still differences.

I went to both a Big Ten school(Wisconsin) and an SEC school(Vandy) so I have a somewhat unique view on the two conferences. Regardless, I'm no expert in the trends of academic standards, but in my process of selecting a school I found the Big Ten universities still vastly outpace the SEC schools in basic admission standards. Generally speaking of course. I have the Big Ten rejection letters to back that up. :-/

Earlier this year, Nic claimed he didn't know exactly how many scholarship players he had.
Judging by his years of over signing, someone will be exiting the program to make room. Look for another player to be added to the record number of "permanently injured" at a Alabama.

Heard this kid has lack of intelligence issues, good news at UA is that if u can fog a mirror u can get a degree there or at least stay eligible for a couple of years....

If it’s still an academic issue then I think that would give a little glimpse of how each of these programs truly values academics.
-------------------------------------------------
Not necessarily. Traditionally, the Big 10 has had higher academic standards than the SEC. But that's been changing in recent years, with some SEC schools performing some Big 10 schools. I don't think this means one school cares more about academics than the other. It could be something as simple as different GPA requirements for admission into his preferred degree program or different rules regarding academic probation.

I didn't know OSU rejected his attempt to return. That's very interesting. Somehow that managed to not make it into any of the three stories/posts I've read about it. I wonder how the elder Carter feels about his alma mater rejecting his son after apparently paying his dues at an academic rehab facility. Was it a personnel decision or did they simply not want him back for fear of the same issue?

The SEC allows coaches to bring in as many as 28 incoming freshmen for possible scholarships, with no more than 85 total scholarship players on the roster when the season begins. Prior to Duron's signing, Saban had signed 22 incoming freshmenfor the 2011 season. Thanks to a loophole, South Carolina had signed 32.

The oversignings are allowed because it's typical that some players fail to make the team, some decide to attend another school where they'll get more playing time, some have behavioral or academic issues affecting their eligibility. Oversigning ensures coaches don't run short of talent. And if they have more players than they can use, those are grayshirted and have their opportunity deferred. Since Bama only brought in 22 freshmen, I doubt anyone will be "sacrificed" to make foom for Duron.

Your claims that Saban lacks ethics in this area are highly exaggerated.

You said, "If a player is a jacka$$ I will call him out for being one." No problem with that. But Dez Bryant, Antonio Cromartie, and Lawrence Taylor are responsible for their own bad behavior, so why repeatedly attribute it to "all" players? That's inaccurate and unfair. You also list behaviors associated with black culture as negatives, such as how players wear their pants or their comments on slavery. The implication in your posts is that you're fed up with black players, not just players, and you think all of them fit a negative stereotype.

I rant and rave to Mike Florio on a daily basis? That's news to me because I'd love to rant about his moderators and their bizarre censorship standards. Unfortunately I don't have Florio's contact info and have never interacted with him.

Sorry to spoil your conspiracy theory, genius, but I haven't tried to get anyone at PFT banned. However, when I complain about censorship, the moderators tell me I shouldn't be too hard on them because they've banned people for calling me a wh*re, c*nt, b*tch, and making all kinds of sick threats against me.

I'll freely admit I attacked you because your disturbing racism has gone unchecked. But all I do here "DIRECTLY" to "MULTIPLE" people on a "DAILY" basis is state my opinion. The sad thing is that men like you and the ones threatening me on PFT think any woman who simply disagrees with them is "attacking."

I’ll freely admit I attacked you because your disturbing racism has gone unchecked. But all I do here “DIRECTLY” to “MULTIPLE” people on a “DAILY” basis is state my opinion. The sad thing is that men like you and the ones threatening me on PFT think any woman who simply disagrees with them is “attacking.”

But that would be your problem, not mine.

I'm honored that you follow me around these sites soaking up as much knowledge as you can about me and reading, even holding onto my words like a vise. But don't you think it's just a tad bit disturbing? Even approaching stalking status?

In any event, why in the world would define me as "racist filth"? If a player is a jacka$$ I will call him out for being one. It doesn't matter if said player is purple, yellow, pink or green. I challenge you to show me ONE example of me using a racist word. Show me ONE example of me singling out a black player over a white player!
I demand a retraction from YOU and a condemnation statement from CFT and PFT when you can not provide.

I hope Duron learned his lesson and lives up to his ability on the field since he was amazingly talented his 1 year at OSU. Nick Saban might stress academics but no one can make a student listen. Tressel stresses academics as well and has coaches peek into classrooms and make sure the players are in class. OSU had tutors and everything else under the sun at his disposal to help with grades and Duron didn't seem to take academics seriously.

For the record, Duron wanted to come back to Ohio State and Ohio State declined to have him back.

Best of luck to him - he seems like a good kid.

The rest of Bama team is shitting bricks though, wondering who is going to get the pink slip to make up for Duron's spot. Since the unethical Saban doesn't have enough roster spots.

Oh another Bama rant from you to me. How nice. Here's my response:

Liar.

The nice thing about you being here is that I can call you out for the racist filth you are without worrying about being censored. Interesting how they leave the monster free to roam the PFT countryside but heaven forbid we should be allowed to point and yell, "Monster!"

What's sad is that so many people inadvertently reveal the darkness in their hearts by giving thumbs up to posts like this one you made about Julio Jones running a 4.39 forty with a broken bone foot:

iknowfootballandyoudont says: Mar 31, 2011 7:34 PM

His secret? “I GOT ME SUM GOOD PILLS”.
The bigger questions are how long it will take him to get barred from a mall?
How soon the ban will be dropped after writing a check?
How low will he wear his pants?
Will he call the owner of his new team a “slave master”?
Will he pay his bills?
Will he shoot someone?
Will he shoot himself?
Will he need a child support lawyer in every state?
Will he be broke in 5 years?
Will he be hanging out with L.T?
Will he be hanging out with Aquib Talib’s mom?
These are what citizens want to know.

Despite your attempts to stereotype them, most players do their jobs and stay out of trouble. Only a small minority get arrested, make negative headlines, or behave as you ranted in this post:

iknowfootballandyoudont says: Mar 29, 2011 8:07 PM

You and your fellow players are being drug through the mud also because you all are ungrateful, selfish, greedy, pompous, egotistical, spoiled, pampered, unaccountable, unreliable, undependable, and have HUGE amounts of self entitlement. ... act like fools and hooligans while out in public. Wear your pants hanging low like jacka$$es. Run around racking up bills and then refusing to pay. Doing drugs, and dealing drugs. Shooting off guns at people, abusing women, sleeping with 16 year olds (former player), making ridiculous, ignorant, and irresponsible “slavery” comments, and crying about not making enough money ...

Your near psychotic hatred of athletes and determination that ALL are responsible for the misdeeds of a few is extremely disturbing. Frankly, I don't know why you watch the sport feeling as bitter and jealous as you so obviously do. Please, get help.

Just another future mugshot waiting to be taken. Another customer for an Alabama bailbondsman.

Nick Saban, commited to education? Who are you trying to fool? Nick Saban is about as commited to education as Jim "the Truth" Tressel is!!!
Saban is just another "win at all costs no matter what it takes", user of young athletes.
He leeches off of young kids for self gain.

One good thing about Duron choosing Bama when OSU didn't work out is that Saban has been committed to improving the educational culture of the football program. He's strict on the athletes about attending classes, and the graduation rate among Tide football players has increased dramatically in his tenure.

It's always exciting when a famous son can follow in his father's footsteps. But it also puts a lot of pressure on the youngster to live up to those expections--especially where both father and son play the same position. This may be better for Duron all the way around. I look forward to seeing him play--and hope for the chance to run into his dad at a game. Always thought Cris was one of the best ever.
