I didn’t overlook the academic status of Florida. There was no reason to specifically mention Florida since we were discussing an issue involving OSU and Alabama. Yes, the academic distance between the SEC and Big 10 is closing. That’s why in my original comment to rjsjr I said:

In fact, Florida outperforms Ohio State. But, again, that was not the topic of the discussion. As a whole, the Big 10′s admission standards remain stricter than the SEC’s. And if you’ll check the current rankings, you’ll find Vanderbilt still outranks all SEC schools and all Big 10 schools except Northwestern. However, Florida does top the remaining SEC schools.

So my post was accurate. I can’t give a rundown on every SEC school in every post when it’s not relevant to the conversation. Failing to mention Florida was not intended to be insulting.

Vanderbilt’s admission standards would be higher than any Big 10 school’s except perhaps Northwestern’s and Michigan’s. Just meant that Bama’s not purposely prioritizing football over academics and granting special concessions to Carter.

Did you go to Vandy for grad school? I went to Mizzou, then earned a scholarship to Vandy for grad school, but a cancer diagnosis blew up my plans. Had to turn down grad school to hang onto my health insurance and get treatment. After that, life just took a different route. The road not taken …

I went to both a Big Ten school(Wisconsin) and an SEC school(Vandy) so I have a somewhat unique view on the two conferences. Regardless, I’m no expert in the trends of academic standards, but in my process of selecting a school I found the Big Ten universities still vastly outpace the SEC schools in basic admission standards. Generally speaking of course. I have the Big Ten rejection letters to back that up. :-/

I don’t think this means one school cares more about academics than the other. It could be something as simple as different GPA requirements for admission into his preferred degree program or different rules regarding academic probation.

The SEC allows coaches to bring in as many as 28 incoming freshmen for possible scholarships, with no more than 85 total scholarship players on the roster when the season begins. Prior to Duron’s signing, Saban had signed 22 incoming freshmenfor the 2011 season. Thanks to a loophole, South Carolina had signed 32.

The oversignings are allowed because it’s typical that some players fail to make the team, some decide to attend another school where they’ll get more playing time, some have behavioral or academic issues affecting their eligibility. Oversigning ensures coaches don’t run short of talent. And if they have more players than they can use, those are grayshirted and have their opportunity deferred. Since Bama only brought in 22 freshmen, I doubt anyone will be “sacrificed” to make foom for Duron.

It’s always exciting when a famous son can follow in his father’s footsteps. But it also puts a lot of pressure on the youngster to live up to those expections–especially where both father and son play the same position. This may be better for Duron all the way around. I look forward to seeing him play–and hope for the chance to run into his dad at a game. Always thought Cris was one of the best ever.
