No movement in battle to replace Cam Newton

Ahead of the start of spring practice, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said that the coaching staff “definitely wants to” name a starting quarterback by the end of the 15 sessions.

Nearly two weeks in, and at least what’s willing to be put out for public consumption, there’s apparently been no separation between junior Barrett Trotter and sophomore Clint Moseley.

Following a weekend scrimmage, head coach Gene Chizik said that the two contenders remain neck and neck in the battle to replace Heisman winner Cam Newton. Speaking to the media after Monday';s practice, Trotter’s words seemed to indicate that this is a positional fight that could very well continue until right before the start of the 2011 season.

It could end up being the last day of fall camp,” Moseley said about the timing for the naming of a starter. “I just have to be prepared for anything. That’s the biggest thing. If I have my mindset right and do all the small things right I just feel like everything will take care of itself.

“If it takes to the end of fall camp or whenever it is or if I don’t win it, I just have to be prepared for anything.”

While Trotter was widely regarded as the slight favorite entering spring, it’s actually an incomplete battle and could very well change regardless of whether or not a starter is named coming out the current sessions. Kiehl Frazier, a member of Auburn’s 2011 recruiting class, will not join the program until summer camp and is a player who some regard as a legitimate contender for the job -- or, at minimum, a significant role in the offense -- as a true freshman.
