Ex-Sooner WR leaving Tulsa, too

In December of 2009, Jameel Owens announced that he was transferring from Oklahoma to Tulsa in order to be closer to his ailing mother.

A year and a half or so later, the wide receiver may be in the market for a third collegiate home.

Owens, who had been on what was described as a “leave of absence” during spring practice, will not be returning to the football program, new head coach Bill Blankenship confirmed Wednesday. No reason was given for the departure by Blankenship, who add that Owens will not be enrolled in school as well.

Owens was eligible to play immediately in 2010 after receiving a waiver from the NCAA, and finished with 18 catches for 246 yards and six touchdowns. The latter total was good for second on the team.

It’s unclear if Owens, a four-star recruit as part of the Sooners’ 2008 recruiting class, will continue his football career elsewhere, although Pittsburgh might be a school to keep an eye on if he does. Todd Graham, who was at Tulsa during Owens’ only season at the school, was named as the Panthers’ new head coach this past January.

If he does decide to continue playing, Owens will have two years of eligibility remaining.
