When Delvon Simmons asked for and was granted a release from his North Carolina Letter of Intent a month ago, it was reported that Texas Tech would be heavily in play for the defensive lineman’s services.
As it turns out, that is indeed the case.
Chris Level of RedRaiderSports.com has confirmed via Twitter that Simmons has committed to the Red Raiders. Level writes that Simmons “can sign a financial aid agreement only and cannot sign a second letter of intent”, so he won’t officially become a member of the football program “until he sits in a class this summer.”
In addition to Tech, it’s believed Simmons had given serious consideration to the Trojans as well.
Simmons signed with UNC in February of this year as a member of their 2011 recruiting class, then asked for a release a little over a month after National Signing Day. It was reported at the time that the departure of defensive line Brian Baker for an NFL job less than a week after signing day played a significant role in Simmons’ decision.
Simmons was ranked as a four-star player and the No. 5 defensive tackle in the country according to Rivals.com. Scout.com had Simmons rated as a five-star player. Talent-wise, he should be able to step in and immediately contribute to Tech’s line rotation.
UPDATED 6:22 p.m. ET: In a press release, Tech confirmed that Simmons has signed a financial aid agreement with the school and will play this fall. The release also mentions that Simmons is believed to be the highest-rated player ever to sign with Texas Tech football.
“Delvon has the ability to be a difference maker in our program,” said head coach Tommy Tuberville. “He is an explosive and disruptive player and an outstanding athlete. We are thrilled to have him.”
