Boise State’s spring game may not typically gain the recognition of other scrimmages like Alabama, Michigan or LSU, but considering that the Broncos were the most polarizing team of 2010, coupled with the losses of two top receivers in Austin Pettis and Titus Young to the NFL Draft and move to the Mountain West Conference, it would be reasonable to assert that they were a team to watch this spring.
But actually watching the spring game itself turned out to be another story, as Boise’s defense ruled the 21-13 final. Quarterback and Heisman finalist Kellen Moore finished 5-of-14 for 50 yards in three series -- almost statistically identical to Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson (who finished 5-0f-14 for 68 yards in Michigan’s scrimmage).
Moore’s backup, Joe Southwick, didn’t fare much better -- 7-of-17 for 120 yards. The ground game was non-existent.
As for finding a capable replacement for Young or Pettis, receiver Geraldo Hiwat had five catches for 97 yards, including a long of 49 yards. The rest of the team had 180 total yards of offense.
“It’s probably good and impressive that our defense finishes on a high note,” coach Chris Petersen said. “When you’re going against yourself, I think your defense should probably have the upper hand.”
Be that as it may, Boise State’s offense is going to have to find capable replacements, and some rhythm, if they’re going to continue their tradition of winning big games against BCS competition. The Broncos open up the 2011 season in Atlanta against Georgia.
