Franklin, not Gabbert, sits atop Mizzou’s QB depth chart

After watching Tyler Gabbert rise from No. 3 on the depth chart to, reportedly, No. 1 in the race to replace Gabbert’s brother as Missouri’s starting quarterback, pre-spring favorite James Franklin used the final week of spring practice as well as the spring game to pull even with the younger Gabbert.

As it turns out, he used that time to officially pull even further ahead than that.

Mizzou released their post-spring depth chart Friday, and the sophomore Franklin is currently listed as the Tigers’ No. 1 quarterback. The redshirt freshman Gabbert will begin the summer voluntary workouts as the top backup, with sophomore Ashton Glaser listed as the No. 3 QB.

Of course, given how the competition in the spring was such a back-and-forth affair that featured Gabbert’s very public and somewhat surprising rise, the player that enters summer camp as the No. 1 isn’t necessarily assured he will be the QB under center when the Tigers open the season Sept. 3 against Miami (OH).

In other words, this is a battle that will resume in late July and won’t likely be settled until the calendar gets deep into the month of August.
