Following up on reports from this morning, Oregon has meted out its initial punishment to linebacker Kiko Alonso, who was arrested early Sunday morning following a very bizarre incident that led to burglary and other charges.
Head coach Chip Kelly announced Monday afternoon that the junior has been indefinitely suspended from the football program. Alonso had exited spring practice as the projected starter at middle linebacker for the Ducks.
The details of what led to Alonso’s latest arrest have also been released by the Eugene Register-Guard, and, to say the least, they’re quite the head-scratcher:Alonso, 20, a junior from Los Gatos, Calif., was arrested early Sunday after a Eugene women called 911 to report a strange man pounding on her front door demanding to be let inside.
The women left the house after calling authorities, who arrived to find the door broken open and Alonso inside. Alonso was arrested on charges of first degree burglary, first degree criminal trespassing and second degree criminal mischief and booked into the Lane County Jail.
“It doesn’t appear that there was any relationship between the homeowner or Mr. Alonso,” Lt. Byron Trapp of the Lane County Sheriff’s office said. “It doesn’t appear she had any idea who he was or any indication why he was at that residence.”
This was Alonso’s second scrape with the law in a little over a year. In February of 2010, he was arrested on a drunk-driving charge and was suspended for the entire season.
Whether this latest incident results in yet another season-long suspension -- or dismissal from the football program -- remains to be seen, with a UO spokesperson saying this afternoon that the school is “still attempting to gather more details surrounding the incident” to determine if any additional punishment is warranted.
