Georgia coach Mark Richt thinks it’s awful. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier can’t get enough of it. And SEC commissioner Mike Slive won’t say what he thinks about it.
Nevertheless, the act of oversigning and grayshirting recruits has become a very polarizing issue in both the SEC and college football (but mainly the SEC) and Slive is now apparently determined to settle the matter once and for all.
Initial details are sketchy, but Slive has reportedly finished writing conference legislation that, at least in some way, would affect the the practice of oversigning. Whether the package supports oversigning, regulates it or abolishes it, though, Slive wouldn’t say.
Nor would he comment on how he personally feels about the controversial act.
“There will be action because (the proposals) will come forth as proposed legislation for the presidents, the AD’s and the other groups to opine on. But I feel good about them,” Slive said. “So I think the goal is to make sure that our prospective student-athletes are treated in a way that is as they should be treated, like students are treated. And I think this package does that.”
Slive also said the package legislation addresses total “roster management” for SEC programs. After Ole Miss coach signed 37 recruits a few years ago, the SEC regulated that no school could sign more than 28 recruits with 25 enrolling in the fall (i.e. the Houston Nutt Rule).
“It’s a question of oversigning, grayshirting, early admissions, summer school admission. We’ve put together what we call a bit of a package to address these issues, that will give our people a chance to think about these issues in a more global fashion.”
Voting will take place during the upcoming SEC league meetings in Destin, Florida.
