Injury hampered Seantrel Henderson for part of spring

(Yeah, it’s slow; sue us)

As has been the case throughout his year and a half at the Div. 1-A level, much ado was made of Miami offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson toward the end of spring practice 2011.

Specifically, the fact that he may be suspended for the season opener; may be unhappy and considering a transfer; and, most importantly as it pertains to the 2011 season, that the nation’s No. 1 recruit in 2010 was definitely listed as the No. 2 left tackle on the Hurricanes’ post-spring depth chart.

While the ‘Canes refuse to confirm the suspension, and the player contends transfer rumors are bogus, there could be a legitimate reason for his placement on the most updated depth chart. At least, that’s what his head coach is putting out there for public consumption.

According to first-year coach Al Golden, and as relayed by the Miami Herald, Henderson suffered an injury that affected his performance through the latter portion of spring practice. Oh, and he’d also allowed his weight to balloon during the offseason, which certainly couldn’t have helped the injured area that impacted his spring performance.

“He hurt his hip-slash-back, which hampered him the last five or six practices. But he had a successful spring,” Golden said. “He came back in January at 385 pounds and he ended up 340. Seantrel’s teammates like him because they know he wants to be a good player.”

Good enough to actually start given the circus that’s been the past 15 months? Check back in a couple of months, when the battle for a starting job along the outer edges of the Hurricanes’ line resumes.
