Russell Wilson reportedly visiting Auburn

It’s still unknown if former North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson will actually play football this fall, but that uncertainty certainly doesn’t appear to be stopping him from making the rounds to some programs in need of a signal-caller.

Sources close to Wilson have reportedly told ESPN’s Joe Schad that Wilson took a visit to Auburn today, as the quarterback contemplates a return for one more season of college football. The source said Wilson arrived in Auburn last night and will spend all of today with the Tigers’ coaching staff.

Earlier this month, despite his release from NC State, reports from Schad arose that there was a “95 percent certainty” that Wilson would be playing in pads this fall, even though that bit of news came as a surprise to the Rockies organization.

He has not once come to us and expressed an interest in playing football this year,” said Marc Gustafson, the Rockies’ senior director of player development. “It is not an issue between the Rockies and Russell. It has never been brought to our attention.”

Still, Wilson has already reportedly spoken with Wisconsin about playing for the Badgers this fall and there appears to be a solid group of schools still eying him.

Auburn will be looking to replace the productivity of another one-and-done QB and could certainly use Wilson for a year as Gus Malzahn continues to develop quarterbacks Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley, who were inconsistent in Auburn’s spring game.

There is, however, one little hurdle Wilson will have to overcome if he is to suit up for the Tigers -- or, anybody else -- this fall. Wilson currently plays for the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists, a Class A affiliate of the Rockies. The Tourists’ regular season ends on Sept. 5, well past fall camp and into the start of the 2011 football season.
