Injury-plagued QB hangs it up at Nebraska

It’s always a tough decision whenever a player decides to end his football career because of injuries, but more often that not, it’s the right one.

Such is the case with Nebraska quarterback Kody Spano (pictured third behind Taylor Martinez), who officially called it quits via Twitter yesterday after dealing with multiple injuries to his knees and shoulder over the past few years.

“As you may have heard, I am hanging up my shoulder pads... However, if the administration allows it, I can still be your favorite Husker!” Spano tweeted. “I will also continue to be with the team this year and the next. You’ll see me on the sidelines signaling in plays!”

Spano, a sophomore from Stephenville, Texas, suffered two torn ACL’s in 2009 and injured his shoulder this past spring -- an injury coach Bo Pelini classified as “significant”.

A shame, to be sure, but a Nebraska spokesperson said Spano will finish up his degree at Nebraska. Obviously, a tough situation for the kid and we wish him nothing but the best going forward.
