Ex-Irish center transfers to Florida

After an injury-riddled five years at Notre Dame, Dan Wenger has decided to finish his collegiate career a little further south and with a pair of very familiar coaches.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the center has decided to transfer to Florida and rejoin Charlie Weis and Frank Verducci with the Gators. “I’m aware of Danny Wenger transferring to the University of Florida,” George Smith, Wenger’s coach at St. Thomas Aquinas in Coral Gables, told the Sentinel. “It’s a very good situation for both parties.”

Wenger suffered a pair of concussions last year and missed most of the 2010 season. He had reportedly not been given medical clearance by the Irish medical staff, which apparently the decision to transfer after receiving a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA.

In 2008, Wenger started all 13 games for the Irish. All told, the offensive lineman played in 29 games and started 19 of those contests.
