Former four-star recruit now an ex-Lobo

On signing day in February of 2010, four-star defensive tackle Calvin Smith stunned most everyone in the recruiting world by picking New Mexico over the likes of Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina.

Just over 15 months later, Smith has decided to take leave of Mike Locksley‘s listing football ship.

In a release, the school announced that Smith had asked for, and been granted, a release from his Lobos scholarship. Smith, a native of Hialeah, Fla., said he was leaving the program in order to get back closer to move closer to home.

“I’ve had a positive experience during my time at New Mexico,” said Smith. “I look forward to getting back closer to home and continuing my college career. I’d like to thank coach Locksley and coach Carter for their support and guidance during my time at UNM.”

Smith, rated as the No. 26 DT in the country according to Rivals.com last year, played in all 12 games for the Lobos during his true freshman season in 2010.
