It’s been less than 24 hours since word surfaced that Cody Green had somewhat surprisingly asked for a release from his Nebraska scholarship, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning out several potential landing spots.
Steven Sipple of the Lincoln Journal Star notes at the end of a piece examining the current state of Nebraska’s quarterback position that he’s been told, presumably by a source familiar with Green’s thinking, that Boise State could be a possibility for the player. A move to the Broncos would make sense on at least one level; Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore has one year of eligibility remaining, which would mean that, after sitting out his transfer season in 2011, Green would have the opportunity to compete for the starting job at the soon-to-be Mountain West Conference school.
Another possibility? Louisville, where Green’s former offensive coordinator, Shawn Watson, is currently the quarterbacks coach. It’s the Watson connection at Louisville that also has former Missouri quarterback Tyler Gabbert interested -- and visiting -- the school, so how the Gabbert situation plays out with the Cardinals could determine what level of interest, if any, Green has in rejoining his former coach.
Then, perhaps based on the fact that he’s a native of the state of Texas, the Omaha World-Herald throws out the names of schools such as Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor and Houston as possibilities, as well as a handful of Big 12 schools in need of QBs -- Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State.
Whichever school ultimately lands Green, they’ll be getting a very talented football player; Green was the No. 6 dual-threat QB in the nation in 2009, but apparently felt he had no shot at beating out incumbent starter Taylor Martinez (no relation) or thriving in a new scheme brought in by first-year offensive coordinator Tim Beck.
