Kansas stays in-house for new defensive coordinator

On the same Kansas announced that defensive coordinator Carl Torbush was retiring after being diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancer, the Jayhawks have found a replacement for the second-year assistant.

And, as it turns out, head coach Turner Gill didn’t have to look very far to find him.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Gill announced that cornerbacks coach Vic Shealy will step in to replace Torbush as KU’s coordinator. Additionally, defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt has been given the title of co-defensive coordinator.

“Coach Shealy is a great fit for the defensive coordinator position,” Gill said. “He has had phenomenal results with developing players as well as relating with them. This will provide our student-athletes with some continuity. ...

“Coach Wyatt is a tremendous asset at the co-defensive coordinator position. We are excited to have both he and coach Shealy working together to lead our defense.”

Shealy, entering his second season with the Jayhawks, had previously been a coordinator at the Div. 1-A level at UNLV. Wyatt is also entering his second season at the school.
