Terrelle Pryor‘s decision to leave Ohio State could be placed on a number of reasons, but mounting accusations of impermissible benefits received — reportedly tallying upward of 40k annually — surely played a part in that process.
But whether it’s accusations of Pryor receiving discounted vehicles or exchanging school memorabilia for tattoos, one former Buckeye player known for taking plenty of impermissible benefits himself believes it’s the players — not coaches or boosters — responsible for the recent troubles at Ohio State.
During an interview on the Dan Patrick Show (you can also listen to the interview by clicking on the link), former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett said inner city kids who go on to play big-time college football were being exposed to a culture shock where a kid goes from having nothing to being offered, and in some cases, taking, everything.
“Anything that any player goes and gets is all based on him and who he meets in the community. The coaches and the university have no control over what the young guy’s doing,” Clarett said.
“There wasn’t any coach or any booster or any member in or around Ohio State who helps you get a car. It doesn’t go on. It’s just guys doing what they want to. People will forever do what they want to. It’s nothing more than young guys making mistakes.”
A certain Sports Illustrated expose would differ to a degree, but it is true coaches cannot monitor a player, let alone a hundred, 24/7; the best a program can do is educate their players to the best of their ability.
And not lie if/when they do find something.
Clarett also questioned the foundation of big-time college football, claiming it was completely bass-ackwards (our words, not his) for universities to make millions off of student-athletes, while the players themselves receive very little.
“Why are they even in that position? Why is it that a university can profit $20 million, $30 million, $40 million and these guys are in the position that they have to sell their memorabilia — the only thing they have of value at that point?” Clarett said. “Why are they even in that position to do that, when there’s enough money to go around?”
Like anyone really cares what comes out of the mouth of one thee Ohio State’s biggest black eyes.
Very good point – doesn’t make it right, but believable explanation.
I also believe ALL coaches, on every single NCAA team ‘are aware’ that things like this go on, but choose ‘not to know’ for obvious reasons.
That’s about to change in a BIG way
I’m black, from the ghetto, and poor. So everyone needs to understand that I am supposed to steal, con, hustle, and rob if I want something.
I am black, from the ghetto, and poor. So everyone needs to ignore my actions, and let me do whatever I want. You must allow me to act anyway I want, take whatever I want, and do whatever I want or I will claim discrimination, profiling, segregation, black victimization, culture differences, or whatever else I can think of.
I am expected to break laws and rules, and should never be punished. Whitey just wants to keep us down.
In other words, Clarett is just another in a looooong line that think just because you are black and from the ghetto gives you an excuse to act like a hoodlum, not work for what you want, make excuses for their actions, break rules, break laws, and make excuses when caught.
Sorry, that line has been played out. Be a man
Please hurry up and post another negative story about Ohio State.
I’m addicted now.
I dont think his point was “we’re poor and black excuse us.” I think his point is valid. its easy for ppl to say they get an education but be honest most big time players could care less. whether raised in the “hood” or growing up on a farm ur goal is to make it to the NFL. One of the perks of the nfl is ofcourse money. To ask them to waist valuable yrs of service for free is criminal. the players get branded crooks, while coaches and everyone in power make millions.
I will never call another grown man, myballsmyrules, So I’ll just call you tom
Hey Tom, That’s not what Clarett is saying, he’s not using that as an excuse in relieving the responsibility from the players themselves. He’s simply explaining the mindset of kids who lived in similar situations as he did. From High School and often before High School, these athletes are treating like a “god” everywhere they go. It should be no surprise that some of these guys expect stuff while playing. However, what Maurice has said, the Responsibility will ALWAYS be the player. The players know right from wrong, but him receiving benefits happened way before college, so if said athlete accepted benefits in high school or earlier, what makes you think that they will all of a sudden do a 180 in college?
So bottom line, he’s not asking everyone to fall for the “I’m Black, poor, live in ghetto excuse, matter of fact I’ll quote from the article above… one former Buckeye player known for taking plenty of impermissible benefits himself believes it’s the players — not coaches or boosters — responsible for the recent troubles at Ohio State.
Again Clarett is blaming the players, blaming the players, again blaming the players, not where they grew up.
Read the article next time before you make ignorant ass assumptions.
I guess I never though I would agree with Clarett especially this part:
“claiming it was completely bass-ackwards for universities to make millions off of student-athletes, while the players themselves receive very little”
What would happen if the players of say the top 25 teams went onto the field and sat down. I bet it would have the NCAA, universities shitting themselves. Michigan can hold 100,000+ people. Lets say each person pays $10. They make a easy Million in one game alone.
Lay down with pigs, wake up covered in muck.
What about the University, and coaches that cannot tell the players “NO”? Pryor walked around with his Gucci clothes, and he and the other players dined at the nicest restaurants in CBus. Even players said Pryor was given preferential treatment, yet Sgt. Schultz (JT) couldn’t see anything wrong.
@secgreatness
I stand by what I posted Al Sharpton Jr.
I don’t need you to tell me how to interpet anything.
I know exactly what he said.
He is making excuses to justify what they do/did.
Now go find another venue to attempt your civil rights good deed for the day, but it is YOU that should read a lil better before thinking you have enough juice/clout to tell me to do ANYTHING
Alright Tom, stop making yourself look stupid. There’s no interpretation needed here. Just read what he wrote in plain back and white letters. I’ll post it again for you to read.
“…one former Buckeye player known for taking plenty of impermissible benefits himself believes it’s the players — not coaches or boosters — responsible for the recent troubles at Ohio State…”
Now the important part for you to read
It’s the players — not coaches or boosters — responsible for the recent troubles at Ohio State…”
What’s to interpret here? Bottom line, you made a dumbass comment based off the title without reading the story. So like I said before read next time, dumbass, instead of assuming you know what you’re saying.
Oh and BTW…”read a lil better before thinking you have enough juice/clout to tell me to do ANYTHING”
you can leave that statement back to 1992 where it belongs, who uses “juice” anymore?
Yet in 2004 he blamed OSU… huh?

@myballsmyrules
What do you mean “they”?
- Sergeant Lincoln Osiris
Ok Al Sharpton, thee who thinks only hios opinion matters. He who thinks he is the wisest of all.
I said what I said, if you don’t like it. TOUGH Sh*T.
Hows that? I dont care what you think. Your thoughts mean zilch to me, you are a nobody.
So dont direct anything at me. Keep your opinions to a captive audience.
Now again. If you don’t like it Jesse, I DONT CARE
And you are in danger lil punk of making me want to start clowning on every single post you print from now on.
Type some more tough print. Its impressive.
Now go order your puppy around, cause you you aint Sh*t Pansie boy
“while the players themselves receive very little”?????
Have you looked into how much a college education costs these days?
- Tuition
- Rent
- Food
- Books
- Etc.
This can add up to over $10,000/year! Maybe more…
How is that “very little”?
We also have to factor in the value of a college education in the long run. People with college degrees make $1,000,000 more than someone withouth over their lifetime.
A full ride for playing football is a very sweet deal!
My dumbass statements from now on with be directed at YOUR dumbass.
@myballsmyrules
You’ve got your feathers awfully riled up over something you don’t care about.
Your original take did sound at best stereotypical and at worst Nathan Forrest-like.
@myballsmyrules: This is your one and only warning. Cut the crap, or you’re gone. It’s that simple, and not up for debate. This has gotten way beyond old. And childish.
@myballsmyrules
Although, there may be some truth in what you were trying to say. The ‘woe is me” and “I’m a victim of my environment” defense is getting played out.
I am sure there are many people that come from low income backgrounds that are able to lift themselves out of it through hard work.
Though at 18/19 years-old if someone was going to offer me a couple grand for a signed hat, I might have to consider that. That’s a good chunk of change.
I will drop it John. But I give fair warning. From now on I will clown EVERY post that I notice from SECGREATNESS

That is exactly what I was attempting to get across. But Mr. Civil Rights Advocate wants to interpet things his way and feel that is the ONLY way to interpet it
myballsmyrules is in trouble, na na na na na myballsmyrules is in trouble
This will stop…
…one way or the other.

I promised you I would drop it, and I am done.

Me? This guy comes on here acting very “Boy bandish” screaming “his intepretation.” I call him out on it, and I need to stop? What do I need to stop? Personally attacking him? I’m not clear on what needs to be stopped.

Exactly. I’m not going to lay out my sob story, it just needs to be said that I am an older returning student who finished in 3 yrs, and managed to walk away with only 30K in debt. Now I can’t find a job.
They simply want money so they can live the lifestyle of an NFL player rather than the lifestyle of what the other 40-50k students have to live at some of these universities.
Hey Tom,
Feel free to clown any comments you want. Sorry, some dude calling himself “myballsmyrules” doesn’t scare me.
of course it’s not anybodys fault, purely situational problem and these poor kids are just innocent victims.
it’s nice that no one has to be held accountable for their actions anymore.
btw, i just ran over someone but i drove off- it wasn’t my fault they were there.
When rational people state the reasons for this kind of behavior, privileged people always label them excuses. Easy for you to say, having not been in that situation.
They’re reasons, not excuses. People aren’t born magically free from social influence.
NCAA is using these student athletes, NOT only do Football specifically generate Millions from memorbilia sales and ticket sales, the TV contracts they negotiate generate millions also, so for the NCAA to make these athletes into criminals because they accept gifts is ridiculous.
Then the schools say it’s amateur sports that’s why they don’t get paid? Amateur? Really? You negotiate Million dollar TV contracts for amateur Sports? On which planet?
Ohh..You say that these students are getting a “Free Education”. Really? So they can eat books while they are at school? Maybe they can wear books also and drive them around campus on the weekends.
Then you villanize these kids, and suspend the school and remove scholarships, but the coach leaves and accepts another MULTI million dollar contract at another school and is not labeled a criminal?…Really?
College Football is big business and they need to treat it as such, like give the athletes some form of stipend while they are generating millions for the school, that way you keep the slime-bal agents away from luring them with incentives which later on end up costing the WHOLE school and the player in the long run.
He sporlo:
Can they eat books? ????
It’s called a “Full Ride” because they get 3 squares a day too (i.e. their scholarship includes food).
It does not however include Gin & Juice…
It also does not include 40′s of Old E…
So it’s completely fair for the school to exploit these students because their getting a “Full Ride”? Really, this is not the 1980′s man, a degree in todays world means nothing, you know how many people are un-employed with Master’s Degrees right now?
Or how about the graduating class of this year are un-employed. People have this misconception that because you have a degree your entitled to a job. With all the shady politics and people in the world, NOW it’s all about WHO you know and NOT WHAT you know and I’m sure many of you can provide an example of some people or someone at your Job that has a Senior title but doesn’t have entry level knowledge or the qualifications for the position, but got the job because of WHO they know or are related too.
This is going on in all organizations and governments so PLEASE do not beat my ears up about a Free Collge Ride, like that equates to anything substantial today. A College degree now is like a HS diploma.
Sportlo:
You are the one drinking too much gin and juice. Snoop doggie dog needs to get a jobby job.
If they feel exploited then they should quit.
Sportlo:
Is your Trailer a double wide?
No they don’t quit, they accept gifts and money. HA HA Nice one, if I was 15 and ignorant I would be offended at your Gin and Juice remarks but I know cowards like you exsist online because they can posts things and reply’s YOU would never say to another mans face so your completely safe behind the CPU screen with your remarks.
Sounds like you had one to many Beers and listening to the Rolling Stones.
Actually I’m at work killing time, your at home trying to entertain your racists ignorant self. I’m a 10 year NAV VET with a middle class income and I enjoy my life. Wish you could say the same.
Do you know the guy who shot Osama Bin Laden?

Thank you! I long for the days where a story would have 3-4 posts….and one was me bashing Michigan.
Putting on my unofficial CFT historian hat, I believe that Boosie is the only poster to ever be banned (except maybe an obvious spammer or something).
“Thank you! I long for the days where a story would have 3-4 posts….and one was me bashing Michigan.”
Or when a certain individual would jump into a post about Ball State… or Iowa State… or New Mexico and toss an unrelated Lane Kiffin blast into the discussion.
……..or threaten you with legal action.
The site has come a long way when a robertg would now sit in the middle of the Bell Curve.
So the thought process in Gee’s/Smiths mindset of “grasping at straws” was this?
Smith – “Hey Gordo, didn’t Dohrmann use ex cons to support his argument in his story?”
Gee – “Yeah I think that is right. So?”
Smith -” It worked out well for him, maybe we should try the same tactic. Who is an ex-con that we can pay off, that will also be embraced by our fans?”
Smith/Gee (at same time) – “Maurice Clarrett!…Genius!!”
“……..or threaten you with legal action.
The site has come a long way when a robertg would now sit in the middle of the Bell Curve.”
My gosh, I had completely forgotten about robertg and his threats to ruin myself, Florio and NBC financially if we didn’t “back off” the Weis/Irish thing. Honestly, though, I kinda miss having our own personal Ted Kaczynski around, littering the comments sections with his thousand-word manifestos.
robertg, if you’re out there buddy, please come back. We miss ya.

Hahaha. Best post of the day.
Yeesh – how sad is it when Machine Gun Mo is the voice of sanity in this scenario? I’m glad he has finally grown up a bit and is taking responsibility for his actions and is trying to get his life back together! I’m guessing 3 years in the slammer does afford one the opportunity of self reflection and the chance to atone for their past mistakes.
“Why are they even in that position to do that, when there’s enough money to go around?” ….
Because if you pay the players (to go off his inner-city comments) then there would cadillacks with dubs rolling campus, plenty of money around for weed, tattoos and of course to walk into the bars/clubs, maybe even some gun purchases. Wait sounds like the NFL? Ahhhh, thats why they don’y pay 18yr olds, becuase that money would be pissed away by most and none of it would go to boosters, shcolarships, educational needs, stadium, facilities etc… AND a scholarship is paying you to attend college (which is a privledge both academically and athletically) then you build a resume for the NFL where you get PAID, college football is an internship, your being trained, given basic accomidations to set you up for the next level. And heck, if not NFL theres something called an education your getting too that can get you paid. I would say having 2 paid career trainings is a nice gift wrappped for these losers. Clarrett went to jail for some serious chargers, declared for draft even tho he wasn’t eleigible and threw his life away, now he is able to comment on whats right and wrong?
