If the Western Athletic Conference and commissioner Karl Benson are going to survive the fallout of being raided and pillaged by the Mountain West at all, they’re going to try and do it by soliciting the help of several FCS football members.
Reports out of the San Jose Mercury News claim that the conference, who is in the middle of league meetings this week, could vote on conference expansion as early as Tuesday. Who the conference extends invitations to is also up for debate.
Lamar, Sam Houston State, Montana and Montana State, Sacramento State and Cal Poly have all been discussed as possible football members.
Cal Poly. Yikes.
Then again, the WAC has already had a tough time trying to replenish the losses of Boise State, Hawai, Fresno State and Nevada — arguably the top four teams in the current WAC setup — so the pickins, as they say, are pretty slim.
Montana and North Texas have already declined offers to join the WAC.
Current FCS programs UT-San Antonio and Texas State have already agreed to join the conference in the near future.
The Mercury News adds that whomever WAC extends invitations to will have until the 2013-14 season to get their financial ducks in a row before making the jump to the FBS.
I’m sure the SEC is “jonesing” for those teams so they can fill out their schedules.
@htru02——- dude you just hate that the SEC dominates college football every year don’t you? Why does it make you so upset that out of the 4 non conference games they play most schools play one tough one, one is homecoming and the other two are middle of the pack schools. Do they not make up for by playing in the toughest conf in all of football and by winning 5 bcs championships in a row and winning the vast majority of their other bowl games. They also were one of the first conf to have a championship game. Take all the shots at the SEC you want, but you just sound foolish and uneducated. Oh and btw Lsu plays Oregon and west Virginia this year, is that tough enough for you. And have you ever thought that these “cream-puff” non conf games they play help the smaller schools pay for their facilities, and other sports programs. And every once in awhile they do lose one of these. Ole miss lost to jax st last year, auburn lost to south Florida a couple of years ago, Alabama lost to Louisiana Monroe nick Sabans first year there. And plenty of other sec schools have rivals in other conf they play every year, fla-FSU , Georgia-Georgia tech, south Carolina-Clemson.

SEC rarely goes after the West teams because they’ve got the Sun Belt to kick around.
