WAC expansion vote might come Tuesday; conference still jonesing for Montana

If the Western Athletic Conference and commissioner Karl Benson are going to survive the fallout of being raided and pillaged by the Mountain West at all, they’re going to try and do it by soliciting the help of several FCS football members.

Reports out of the San Jose Mercury News claim that the conference, who is in the middle of league meetings this week, could vote on conference expansion as early as Tuesday. Who the conference extends invitations to is also up for debate.

Lamar, Sam Houston State, Montana and Montana State, Sacramento State and Cal Poly have all been discussed as possible football members.

Cal Poly. Yikes.

Then again, the WAC has already had a tough time trying to replenish the losses of Boise State, Hawai, Fresno State and Nevada -- arguably the top four teams in the current WAC setup -- so the pickins, as they say, are pretty slim.

Montana and North Texas have already declined offers to join the WAC.

Current FCS programs UT-San Antonio and Texas State have already agreed to join the conference in the near future.

The Mercury News adds that whomever WAC extends invitations to will have until the 2013-14 season to get their financial ducks in a row before making the jump to the FBS.
