Getty ImagesSuffice to say, it’s not been a good last couple of days for the South Carolina secondary.
On Friday, backup freshman cornerback Victor Hampton was dismissed from the football program for unspecified reasons. Two days later, a starter from the same unit has found himself in an off-field situation for very specified reasons.
By way of The State newspaper, WLTX-TV last night reported Saturday night that DeVonte Holloman had been arrested a day earlier and charged driving under the influence.
The station reports that Holloman was one of 12 people nabbed at a Columbia, SC, sobriety checkpoint for various offenses, include drunk driving.
The school has yet to comment on Holloman’s situation or status.
The junior started 10 games for the Gamecocks last season, and has played in 27 games the past two seasons. He was a four-star member of South Carolina’s 2009 recruiting class and the No. 10 outside linebacker according to Rivals.com.
I somehow had a feeling that Hampton would worm his way back into the program.
What’s worse? DD pinch or just being an all-round trouble maker?
Rock. Paper. Scissors.
Ugh, notwithstanding the questionable constitutionality of DUI checkpoints, what a dumbass.
Any D1 program provides rides for these kids–they literally have to be brain dead to get DUIs (didn’t stop Dunlop!–also an idiot).
Hope this doesn’t mess up the ‘Ole Ball Coach too much–I’ve been rooting for him lately. He really had done something with USCe.
So, the big question: does he cut him? Any USCe fans know if he has any disciplinary history?
@JT: what were the other “various offenses”? I didn’t see any others mentioned in the links. Hopefully nothing too serious.
New MADD slogan: “If you drink and drive, you’re a real cock.”
Henceforth, the act of setting up random police checkpoints in the state of South Carolina shall be referred to as “cock-blocking”.
Dont worry DeVonte they only kick the backups off the team. If your a starter you get at least five chances.
@pjduffey – He has had no other issues and is a good student. This is very disappointing because he is looked at as a leader. His play slipped last year, so I wonder if alcohol was a problem.
It should be okay though, right? He was partying on
the OLD Ball Coach’s Tab. Maybe the NCAA will
consider letting the school pay for Defensive Driving
School so this kid can drive by the time he graduates!
Such a waste, but trust me; IT Happens to the best
sometimes.
Has south carolina ever won the SEC. I guess everyone beats the cocks.
