Tide’s Trent Richardson victim of a hit-and-run

While the specifics are very scant at this point in time, multiple media outlets are reporting that Alabama running back Trent Richardson was involved in an accident early Thursday morning in which the driver who hit him fled the scene.

According to the Birmingham News, the hit-and-run occurred at approximately 1:30 local time this morning in Tuscaloosa. It’s unclear whether Richardson was injured in the accident, and the school has yet to issue any type of statement clarifying the current state of the back’s health.

Here’s the release from the Tuscaloosa Police Department on the incident:

Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a Leaving the Scene Of An Accident/ Menacing Call that occurred at 1:30 am this morning (06/30/11) in the 2300 Block of 4th Street. Trent Richardson was the victim in the incident. A citation was issued for the leaving the scene of an accident. Mr. Richardson declined prosecution on the Menacing Charge and the case has been closed. No further details will be released.

The junior is expected to carry a sizable portion of the Tide’s running game load following the departure of former Heisman winner Mark Ingram.

UPDATED 3:48 p.m. ET: You can breathe easier, Tide fans. Chris Low of ESPN.com‘s SEC blog reports that Richardson was not injured and is doing fine.
