Ex-Wake QB opts for Memphis for final season

Skylar Jones

Nearly four months after leaving Wake Forest, Skylar Jones has found a new home for his final season of college ball.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, head coach Larry Porter confirmed Monday that Jones has decided to transfer to Memphis.  As Jones has already received his degree and will enter a graduate program not offered at Wake, he will be eligible to play immediately for the Tigers in 2011.

The U of M’s starter is Andy Summerlin, who transferred to the school from the JUCO ranks in January of 2010 but missed the season due to a shoulder issue.  The addition of Jones will give Porter some experienced depth — at least — behind his current starter; in 2010, Jones exited spring practice as Wake’s starter and, while he lost the job, still ended up playing in five games for the Demon Deacons last season.

The addition of Jones continues an offseason of shakeup and transition at the position.  In March, Ryan Williams, who was the U of M’s starter last season, decided to transfer, ultimately landing in Miami with the Hurricanes.  Additionally, Cannon Smith moved from QB to wide receiver earlier this year.
